Sugarcane forms clumps of canes with light green leaves. The stems are attractive purple/maroon colour if the leaves are stripped back. Sugarcane stems are made up of short internodes. Sugarcane, is a multi use tropical, grows well in the North Island,
Uses for privacy hedging and adding a tropical look to your garden, used in a multitude of cultures for various dishes, juicing or adding the juice to smoothies, or as a natural sweetner to beverages, pancakes, or chewing on as a tasty snack.
Size - 2-5 metres tall. Tending to be smaller in cooler climates. Stems or canes are 2.5 – 7cm thick.
Planting Advice, you can dig a trench, and lay the cane down horizontally and cover in soil, and you will get little sugarcane plantlets popping up all in a row!
Harvest - The hard juicy sugarcane stems can be harvested 12 – 20 months after planting. The plant's rhizome will continue to crop for 3 -5 years. Canes are cut close to the ground as the base of the stem contains the most sugar. The leaves are stripped off and the canes are cut into shorter lengths.
I package these sugarcane plants into PB28 bags and package well. But shipping is at buyers risk.
